New Laptop!

My new laptop arrived on Monday.  It's a Dell Latitude D610.  I'm pretty happy with it so far, but it is a monster.  I had been using one of those Dell superlights, I forget the model, and it's quite a difference.  It's pretty fast, but by the time I've installed half of MSDN Universal, it's slowing down a bit.  :)  It's got a 2G Pentium M, a Gig of memory, and an 80 GB HD.  I compiled a VB.Net solution with about 40 projects in just a couple of minutes; it used to take about 12-14.

Overall, it's got some pretty nice features and thankfully Dell doesn't send it pre-installed with too much crap.  I like the “eraser-head” style mouse, but it also has a touchpad, which I disabled.  In the office, it's docked so I have a regular mouse connected, but I'm a keyboard shortcut junkie, so I try not to use it too much.  The keyboard feels nice, but the touchpad means that there's a lot of space between the front of the machine and the keys.  I'm not sure I like that too much.  The dock has all the usual ports, but I understand that the docks VGA port can be used with the laptop's LCD to enable dual-displays.  I'll try that tomorrow; I'm hooked on the dual-display thing and really had to work to make sure my new primary machine would support it.  My desktop at work now is a bit dated, but I still use it because in VS.Net I can have code on one monitor and undocked tool panels on another.  [If you are a coder and don't have 2 monitors - DO IT NOW.  It only takes a cheap video card and monitor.]

It has Gigabit ethernet, G wireless, and bluetooth.  I don't have anything bluetooth, but I'm using the other 2, and have noticed a big difference.

My one complaint - the LCD screen doesn't seem quite as crisp as it should.  I'll play around with the settings some more.  It's the mobile Radeon X300 video card and I've had “issues“ with ATI drivers before.

Since I've never gotten a new laptop at this job before (new desktops, but hand-me-down laptops) I'll put it through its paces and report back here.
