A Better Developer - Two Months In...

Two months ago, I posted about being a better developer in 6 months just like everyone else.  Since I want to keep this going, I’m grading myself periodically to see where I stand…

1.

Blog more.
Not Changed: Exactly the same as last month… “OK, I really said every other day, but I have improved.  Hey this is my second post today!  :)”  (C)
2.      Finish and Expand the SDK for work.
There’s still plenty more to do on this, and hopefully I’ll make it a priority this week by writing this!  It has
spawned a couple of blog posts though.    (B-)
3.      Upgrade this website.
Well, if you’re reading this you can probably tell that I’m not running
dotText and DotNetNuke anymore.  Sorry, I really wanted to work with DNN but the upgrade path was a killer (in part because I didn’t keep up with the upgrades as they were released, but there’s just so damn many, and even one at a time it still failed more often than not).  I also tried dasBlog in the meantime, but couldn’t get it to play nice on my ISP.  So, here we are, one third of they way through, and I can (almost) officially mark this as done.  We’re kicking Community Server 2007 now.  Guess I’ll be reading Dave Burke’s blog posts a little more carefully now, like this one.

4.      Learn the Castle stack.
I still don’t like it.  With
the imminence of ScottGu’s MVC framework, I may not have to worry.  I still want to learn the concepts though.  And because of some work projects headed my way, I may have to add SharePoint to the list.  I may need to refactor this goal.  (C+)
UPDATE 10/24/2007: OK, I'm starting to like it more, but still wary of troubles with using 3rd party controls.
5.      Get comfortable with Orcas.
Not Changed: “Haven't touched the bits I downloaded.”  (D)
6.      Stop writing classic ASP.
Not Changed: “This will hopefully become much easier when I finish #2, but so far I'm still in it.”  (D)

Overall, a reasonable improvement for month 2, but still a solid C.  I'll grade myself again next month, but in the meantime,
how’s Jim doing?
